There are lots of misconception that exist regarding weight loss. Here I focus on these three because of how common they are.

Believe it or not you can actually enjoy your food and still lose weight. You don't need to go on some crazy detox or feel miserable just to lose weight.

The key is calorie deficit. So as long as you lower your daily caloric intake, you will lose weight. But that doesn't mean you ignore your veggies and other healthy options because your health is still key.

You also don't need to workout everyday or multiple times in a day. If your schedule allows you to workout more then 3 or 4 times, then awesome go for it. But most people can't fit that many in to their schedule and that's ok. 3 workouts of 45mins to hour is sufficient to see results.

And last but never least, stop avoiding your cultural foods. Yes, there are some foods you should limit to cheat meals or special occasions. However, rice and bread is not one of them. Most of our cultures are built on food, so you won't last long is you continue to vilify entire food groups.

You can eat carbohydrates and lose weight. Research upon research has shown it time and time again. Also, our clients are living proof as well. Heck so am I... I love rice and eat it everyday.

Imagine being able to enjoy yourself and still lose weight... Mind blowing eh...

What's another misconception you've heard in the past that isn't true?

The difference, the latter may involve a devastating situation no one's wants to be in.

For example the amount of people that get diabetes simply because of their habits.

It's to a point where it's become an epidemic for kids. Kids are developing type 2 diabetes because of their lack of activity and nutritious food. Now that's not the child's fault. It's the environment you develop at home.

It's why it's so important to take care of your health and fitness. Your kids are watching and following. But regardless of kids, why put yourself in a situation where you become dependent on medication.

Start now and make it a lifestyle.

You don't need to be in the gym 5 or 6 times a week at the gym. 3x a week or even 2 can make a huge difference. And eating healthy isn't tough, just stop looking for short cuts.

Add more veggies to your food and eat smaller portions. The fiber from the veggies will make you feel full.

With Ramadan around the corner, @nutritionbynaz and I launched The Ramadan Preparation Program.

The program begins a month before Ramadan and is geared toward helping you have your most energized Ramadan yet. Plus, you also get a copy of The Healthy Ramadan Guide! This book has helped over 1000 people transform the way they fast.

We'll be going live later on today to share more details about the program and the importance of preparing for Ramadan.

I recommend having flaxseed as a staple in your kitchen as it can be very challenging to get enough omega 3s in your diet. However, what most people don't know is that consuming whole flaxseed isn't going to give you ALL of the health benefits. The reason for this is because their shell is quite tough and they're small seeds, so they pass through your digestive system without giving your body the benefit!

So instead, you want to consume freshly ground flaxseed or a high quality flaxseed oil. @ActivationProducts Perfect Press oils have 100% potency and retains 100% of the benefits from flaxseed that you would miss by only eating the seed.

Not only does flaxseed contain omega 3s, but also fibre, zinc, magnesium, selenium and more!

Regular consumption of flax along with a balanced diet can help with improving your heart health, supporting your digestive system, and help with skin, hair, and joint health.

I like to include flaxseed oil in my smoothies by mixing in a teaspoon.

I want to give 25 of you the opportunity to try out @activationproducts flaxseed oil for yourself! Here's how to enter this giveaway:

Throwback to last year when we were ready to launch The Healthy Ramadan Guide and then a pandemic hit.

I still remember the stress both @nutritionbynaz and I went through and the unknown that existed at that time. From shipping issues, to packaging, to the book itself even being able to print.

That's right, because the pandemic closed almost every company, we were at risk of not even being able to print the book at all.

But alhumdulillah through Allah's help everything worked out and people from over 34 countries purchased a booked. From Japan, Malaysia, Germany the book went to many different cultures and yet the feedback was so glowing.

We were absolutely humbled by the outpouring support towards the very first print edition. The only book of its kind that tackles fasting, nutrition and fitness all in one.

So to add even more to the book, this year we want to provide more than just the book. We want to help you before Ramadan even begins. To help you get on track and be consistent before the blessed month so you can hit the ground running on the first day of Ramadan Insha'Allah.

Tomorrow (Feb 23) we will share how you can join the Ramadan Preparation Program and receive a free copy of the book!

If you did get one last year, let us know how you liked it. 🙂

Just because it’s the weekend, doesn’t mean calories don’t count. You can undo all your hardwork in just a few days.

You need a plan, one that will allow you to enjoy your weekend and stay on track. Generally you will have an idea of how your weekend will look. If you are going to your family's house, if you plan to order out, or it’s when you like to kick back and watch a movie with something to eat.

Plan according to what is happening that weekend. Do not leave it to chance. Leaving to chance is almost always guaranteed to backfire and then you'll feel guilty and regret whatever you ate.

Now if you’re going to regret something, then why do it?

Look at your weekend, if you know Saturday is the day something will come up then stay on track on Friday. Then figure out what time on Saturday you will be eating something unhealthy. Whatever it may be, you don’t want to feel guilt, you want to enjoy it, so enjoy it guilt free.

So if you know it’s Saturday evening, then have a breakfast with protein, veggies and light carbs, try to get in a workout soon after, have a shake (or a protein and veggies meal only) and then don’t eat anything until the “cheat meal” comes up.

This way you stay well below your caloric intake for the day and you won’t feel guilty.

And now just imagine being able to enjoy eating whatever you want with absolutely no
guilt and enjoying it even after you ate it. It’s a good feeling! 😉

So how are you planning this weekend?

Doing exercises with weights has huge benefits.

One of them is improving bone density and preventing bone loss. A key factor in preventing injuries as you age.

We often associate lifting weights with just our muscles, but that's not the case at all. Weight bearing exercises are crucial in keeping you strong and healthy overall.

Adding resistance will not only strengthen your muscles but also your bones. Especially as you age, it becomes even more important.

After the age of 40 your muscles start to break down at a faster rate. The two ways to prevent that is weight training and increasing your protein intake.

Now you don't need over think this either. It doesn't have to be super heavy weight nor do you have to take part in some super high intensity workouts either. Rather have a structured workout program that helps your progress with purpose. Follow a program that not only gets your stronger but also improves your movement as well.

Now go strengthen your bones...

The solution to your sweet tooth isn't to swear off sweets forever. We all know that isn't going to last! The more you restrict, the more you think about what you can't have, and then you end up eating a lot more and feel guilty. Living in that cycle is no fun!

Instead, find healthy alternatives that will satisfy your sweet tooth!

One of my fave things to have on hand are energy bites (for my sweet tooth and a treat for the kids).

Here's how to make these Peanut Butter Chocolate Energy Bites:

• 2 cups dates pitted
• ½ cup all natural peanut butter
• 2 Tbsp cocoa powder

In a food processor, blend all ingredients until a dough forms. Using moist hands, roll the dough into 1 inch balls. Enjoy! (Recipe on thehealthymuslims.com as well).

I hate keto! That's right, I said I hate keto...

These types of extreme approaches cause more stress, anxiety and basically destroy your relationship with food.

Most cultures are built around food and it is a way to bring people together. These types of diets do the opposite. You can't eat at freinds and families homes, you start to dread parties and restaurants and then you begin to feel alienated from the normal world.

If your background is from Asia, the middle east, Africa, South America, your culture is built on foods like bread and rice. Stop letting people tell you that they are bad.

Now it's important to understand, I'm not saying going on Keto won't make you lose weight, or that it won't work short term. It definitely can and you probably will lose weight following it. But it's not because there is some sort magic inside of it. It's simple math, it helps you lower your daily calories and so you lose weight. That's it.

But what happens afterwards? Every single person I know that followed keto has not continued it permanently. I'm talking about hundreds of people that have followed it that I know personally. The worst part is as soon as you stop, you probably won't know how to adjust the calories and will gain weight.

Think about that for a second... You go on a super restricted diet to only gain weight once you start eating regular food. I don't know about you, but yeah I'll pass.

There's no secret to losing weight. Lower your caloric intake and you will lose weight.

I guess I should add a small disclaimer that I'm not totally against Keto, I'm against the notion that our cultural habits are backwards. Yes too much carbs are not good for you. But too much of anything is not good for you. All of our clients eat carbs and enjoy what they eat and still see great results. But the best part is the improved relationship they gain with their foods.

They no longer go around vilifiing certain foods and actually enjoy what they eat. Also, they stop thinking their own culture is backwards and some how the west will save us from ourselves.

Believe it or not, you can enjoy your food and still lose weight.
...

Can't even explain how much I miss the gym.

There is this aura that surrounds the gym that I used feed off of. Seeing others lift heavy and environment always got me super motivated. It's the easier choice to sit back and make excuses.

"I can't workout at home", "I don't have equipment", "I don't have space" etc...

Unfortunately our health doesn't care if the gym is open or not. So the choice is up to you. We can make the most of the situation or we can sit back and make it worst.

Working out strengthens our muscles, bones and joints. It improves our cardio vascular health. It also has a major impact on our mental health. We feel better after working out and our mood improves.

It's not just about losing weight, which obviously is important. But it's our overall health and taking care of it is our responsibility.

So we can either complain about all the restrictions and let it be an excuse, or rise above it and be better coming out of this pandemic.

We all know life never goes in a straight line, it has its up downs, but the key throughout is to never stay down.

“No amount of guilt can change the past and no amount of worrying can change the future.” Umar ibn Al-Khattab (ra)

This trial is a test and it too shall pass Insha'Allah.

As great as your kids' healthy balanced plates are, the best things you can do for your kids are:
1) Eat healthy meals with your kids
2) Actually enjoy healthy meals
3) Stop using negative language about your body/other bodies around them

Listen, kids are smart, they're watching us. And that's scary.

If you're tied up in diet culture and/or having a hard time loving yourself, I'm sorry to say it's only a matter of time your kids start picking up on it.

Especially now with the pandemic, we are around our families a lot more than normal. Our kids are watching and learning everything.

It's easy to blame the kids as picky eaters, not finishing their plates, giving us a hard time. But be honest...what role are you playing in this?

I know it's hard parenting now more than ever and I'm not saying you need to be perfect, but I'm asking you to start.

3 simple things you can do this week with your family:

1. Make your grocery list together (ask kids what veggie and fruit they would like)
2. Make a recipe together.
3. Eat a healthy meal as a family.

The end goal is to raise kids that have a good relationship with food, are healthy, and love themselves.

What's your #1 struggle with feeding your kids?

Stop trying to achieve your past self. It's ok to be a new you.

I often have men tell me about how fit they were in their mid 20's, or before marriage, or before they had kids...

Well when you were that "fit", you also didn't have the responsibilities you do now. You also had a lot more free time allowing you to be more active. But that doesn't mean you can't be "fit" anymore. It just might not be at the same exact point you were years ago.

And that is perfectly fine...

As you age, your won't recover as fast and won't have as much time available either. But you can still lose significant weight, get stronger and build a healthy lifestyle.

In fact you learn to appreciate it more. You will actually feel better then you ever have simply because you will be more grateful.

Stop looking at the past and reminiscing, instead look to the future and work to improve. We all have time, it's just about prioritizing.

Are fruits and veggies equal?

We all know that we should be eating more fruits and veggies. They're put together in the same category, so people tend to eat them interchangeably.

For example, you may have a couple of fruits in a day so you feel good that you've been eating healthy.

Except, they're not exactly interchangeable.

Non-starchy veggies have a lot of fibre and nutrients without the natural sugars. So adding this to your meals helps you feel a lot more full and satisfied.

While both fruits and veggies pack in a variety of nutrients, antioxidants, and fibre, fruits do still have natural sugars. Now I'm not here to say fruit is bad - that's not what im saying at all.

What I'm saying is if you're having 2 fruits a day, then you should be having about 5 servings of veggies a day.

Another tip to remember is to replace your packaged snacks with fruit and for veggies, add it to your meals.

I totally get that it can be a lot easier to get in fruit than veggies in - there's  a lot more prep work involved. But it's just as important! There's no getting around it.

Here's my challenge to you - track how many servings of fruits and veggies you are having in a day. [1 cup = 1 serving]. Let me know below how you get in your fruits and veggies!!

Fitness is a slow process. It's a journey we go on which has its ups and downs.

It requires patience and far too often people give up right before they are about to break through.

There's a reason why diet pills and fancy 'weight loss' diets are a multi billion dollar industry. Because it's easy to sell quick fixes, even though research upon research will tell you not to follow such plans.

You can't spend years being inactive, eating whatever, how ever much you want and think a few short weeks will make it all go away.

Does that mean you can't reach your goals? No, not at all!

But stop focusing on the short term. Just like you don't become successful overnight, you won't get fit overnight.

Short term results bring short term gains.

It's a process, enjoy it and appreciate it.

Because I guarantee you that you will thank yourself at the end of it.

You will gain confidence, self-respect, others will use you as motivation and best of all, you will feel great.

Stay strong on your goals and it's ok if you fall, just get back up and keep going.
