There are many be benefits to working out during Ramadan.

I'm just highlighting a few that are important to remember and focus on.

1. Increased Energy Levels

- Believe it or not a workout should actually improve your energy levels. Especially during this month you don't want to drain yourself.

You have lots of time during the year to go all out during a workout. Your workouts during Ramadan will give you a boost of energy.

2. Mental Health

- Working out has a significant impact on our stress and overall mental health. Especially during this month when we are trying to do so much and add extra prayers, it does get a little tough. Your workouts will help take the stress off.

Working out releases a natural hormone called endorphins, which is basically a happy hormone. It get you feeling better which can lead to a better memory and sharper mind.

3. Improves Strength & Mobility

- The last thing you want is to not be able to sit or stand for prayers for long periods of time because your lower back or knee is bothering. Putting focus on improving your mobility and strengthening your core will have a huge impact.

You will notice a difference in your overall strength from a day to day perspective but also be able to get more done.

4. Fitness Goals

- This month is the best time to help build a strong foundation. To take a step back and refocus towards the fundamentals. Working on your stability and movements will make you stronger in the long run.

It will also help you lose weight by burning more calories. Of course what you eat will be key, but your workouts will help significantly.

If you want more details and a full workout program and meal plan. Get your copy of The Healthy Ramadan Guide at Www.TheHealthyMuslims.com/book or link in bio.

I am super excited to be partnering with @foodbasicson this Ramadan to share some delicious & healthy recipes! First up is suhoor, which can be challenging to figure out what to eat in the middle of the night! My family’s go-to has been Overnight Oats because I can make it ahead of time and this recipe has the perfect balance of protein, fibre, and healthy fats.

Here’s how to make your own Very Berry Overnight Oats:
½ cup oats
1 Tbsp chia seeds
½ cup milk
½ cup plain Greek yogurt
¼ cup mixed berries
1 Tbsp nuts and seeds of choice (I used almonds and pumpkin seeds)

Add into a mason jar in the order above. Cover and store in the refrigerator for at least 5 hours before having for suhoor.

I love that I was able to find all of these ingredients at @foodbasicson while being budget-friendly! Food Basics offers its customers savings on their products by providing “Always More for Less”. On top of all the savings, Food Basics' Kitchens of the World aisle includes a wide selection of products to meet all of your needs this Ramadan.

Tag a friend who can benefit from having a more energized suhoor!

*Ramadan Food Traditions*

Whether you've grown with them or created your own, everyone has their own Ramadan food traditions.
One Ramadan tradition that we have developed over the past few years is having various combinations of refreshing fruit for iftar. This replaced an older tradition we grew up with, which was to have fried items as soon as we opened our fast.

So no, in our house you don't smell fried oil and samosas, but instead, I am sure to plate the fruit in a pretty platter so the family looks forward to it after a long fast.

Seeing our kids have fruit every evening made me realize this is a tradition and memory they will remember. Hopefully, they'll carry it on as adults and remember the refreshing taste of fruit, dates, and water at sunset.

What's one family food tradition that you have for Ramadan? Is it one that you've carried on from your elders or you've developed your own?

Ramadan only comes once a year and it goes by very quickly.

Let's make sure to take full advantage of this blessed month. The opportunity is in front of us, let's not let it go to waste.

The first few days can be tough because your body is adjusting to a new way of eating and a new schedule. So it becomes even more important to make sure you eat healthy to keep your energy up and stay active.

It's easier to give in to temptation, then it is to stay strong. But staying strong will bring the results you have been seeking.

Stay strong and have a great Ramadan!

The most common question I receive every year, what time is the best time to workout.

To be honest there is no real "best time", it's whatever times is easy on your schedule.

Note, it's just numbered based on times not which is best.

1. Before suhoor
- This can be right before eating suhoor or a few hours before.

Some are able to make a nocturnal schedule. So they stay up all night and then sleep after Fajr.
The good is that you have food and water available to you. The problem lies primarily with your sleep. Day sleep will never replace night sleep. The quality of your sleep and overall health can be negatively affected by this time. Our sleep is already affected during Ramadan, this can add to it.

2. Afternoon
- Right after zhur.

This time takes the most getting used to. It's also not available for most because of work. However, working out during this time will give you a boost of energy for the remaining half of the fast. It's my go to time during Ramadan.

3. Before Iftar - The most popular one

The great thing about this time is having food and water available to you soon after the workout. However, it's also the time you have least amount of energy from the long fast. It's also a time most will dedicate towards ibaadah.

4. After Iftar - Usually an hour or so after eating

Usually this time isn't ideal because of taraweeh. But because of covid most won't have any long taraweeh and this time becomes available. However, it can affect your sleep, as it gets tough to fall asleep after a workout. However, you will have food and water available.

As you will note, each time has a positive and a negative. It comes down to when the best time is for you.

Take the first few days to figure it out and keep your schedule in mind. Even the best program in the world is useless if you are not consistent. And you won't be consistent if it doesn't fit your schedule.

What's your go to time??

Does a healthier Ramadan mean a Ramadan where you can't enjoy your foods and cultural traditions? Absolutely not!

It's important to reflect on what the true essence of Ramadan is. Is it really about fasting for 15-18 hours, only to overeat at iftar for 30 days straight?

A healthy Ramadan is only truly beneficial when you reflect on your intentions. Sure you'll lose weight, but dig deeper. A healthy Ramadan will allow you to have more energy so that you can do more ibadah, so that you can continue any community work, so that you can continue to be kind to others while fasting.

What I'm saying is having a healthy Ramadan goes far beyond the superficial benefits. If you reflect on your intention, you won't feel like you're missing out when you say no to a plate full of fried foods. Instead, you'll be acting on moderation and will be happy to find yourself energized enough to engage in even more ibadah during the night.

In the picture is a healthier alternative to ice cream, a recipe included in The Healthy Ramadan Guide! So while you are making healthier choices, you will still be able to enjoy your suhoor, iftar, and post iftar snacks inshaAllah!

[HOW TO DRINK ENOUGH WATER DURING RAMADAN]
save + tag to stay hydrated!

If you're experiencing any symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, cramps, low energy while fasting....it may be because you haven't been drinking enough water since Ramadan started!

The truth is, you should be drinking the same amount of water in a fasting day as you would on a regular, non-fasting day. It may sound challenging to some, but it just requires a bit of planning!

In the infographic, you can see exactly how to spread out your water intake. All of a sudden, it feels a lot more doable! You can save this and have a peek so you don't forget. I also feel like sometimes the days blend into each other, especially if you're staying up late, so breaking it up helps make sure that each day you're drinking enough water.

Three things to remember:
1. Each individuals water requirements differ. Breastfeeding mamas in particular should be drinking more water. Body size and age also impacts how much your body needs.
2. Avoid sugary drinks and try to stick to water, lemon water, and herbal teas.
3. Eat high-water content fruits and veggies like cucumber, watermelon, berries, etc to help with your hydration goals.

Tag a friend who can use a boost with more water this Ramadan!

There are many different avenues within fitness. Each one requires a lot of work and effort to be good at.

Bodybuilding is just one avenue, but the amount of work and calories required... It's almost impossible for the average person to reach. It's basically a full time job to be able to have that "big bodybuilder look".

It's something I hear from guys just as much from women. "I don't want to get all big and bulky, like a bodybuilder". Well, you won't. That's not how our body works. We don't just lift a weight and automatically get big.

Look at athletes like basketball players, hockey players or even soccer players. Each one of their physiques is different based on their sport. They all workout everyday and consistently, yet none of them would be considered bodybuilders.

When you workout you have to have certain goals in place and you need the right plan to help you reach that goal. Each plan will provide different results, so make sure you are on the right one for your goals.

Ever thought lifting weights will make you big and bulky?

Your mindset in Ramadan can make or break your Ramadan.

Don't let yourself sleep through the entire fast or neglect your what you eat and how active you are. Fasting has many benefits but we'll be hard pressed to achieve any of them if you don't atleast start with the right mindset.

I can't wait for Ramadan to start. I already have my goals set and can't wait to start to tackle them.

Insha'Allah you all have a blessed Ramadan!

Unfortunately Ramadan very quickly becomes the month of feasting as opposed to the month of fasting.

It's not always easy to say no, but teaching ourselves to say no will not only benefit us physically but spiritually as well. Especially living in a time of instant gratification and constantly being told to follow our desires, it can be very difficult.

But through the difficulties comes great victories. We can use Ramadan as training, to teach us to continue to be strong well after Ramadan. At no other times of the year are we told not to eat or drink for long periods of time. So why not take full advantage of this time and build strong habits.

Ramadan has so many blessings with it, one of them can be fighting our desires. And yes, food is a desire... One that can very harmful if we are not mindful.

So this Ramadan, try remembering the true essence of fasting as Iftar time rolls around.

A yearly samosa reminder! 😅

Now this is just samosas, add on the spring roles, pakora and whatever else that is deep fried. Most people probably surpass 2-300 fried items easily in just one month.

Think about that for a second... In a month where we should be refraining, we do the complete opposite. It become the month of feasting as opposed to fasting. 😏

But don't get me wrong, I want good food as well. I want food that is delicious, but I also want to keep in the spirit of Ramadan.

Hence the recipes in The Healthy Ramadan Guide cover both aspects. They are absolutely delicious and are healthy. Two things you didn't think were possible to go together and yet they do... 🙂

I often get asked what my favourite recipe is in The Healthy Ramadan Guide...and it has to be the Chapli Meatloaf!

Here's the story behind it:

Growing up I would hear classmates talk about having Meatloaf for dinner. Of course, I never had it. When I got married and had my own kitchen, I searched up what meatloaf was and the recipe seemed so bland (if you're not familiar with it, its basically some variation of salt, pepper, and ketchup).

As much as I was excited about the idea of meatloaf, I knew I had to change up the flavours so my family would enjoy it. That's where I merged the chapli kabab with meatloaf...and ta da, you have our family favourite Chapli Meatloaf!

The # 1 priority when developing recipes in this book was that it tasted good! These recipes have been child, husband, and parent approved! I've tried my best to merge a variety of cultures and flavours, which is a reflection of how I cook too. Last year our book reached over 30 different countries and we received positive feedback from all cultures and backgrounds alhumdulilah!

To order your copy, visit the link in bio now!

For those of you who have the book, what's your fave recipe? If you just got the book, which recipe are you looking forward to trying the most?
