The vast majority of people only post their highlights and not the years of work required to achieve what they have.

You will see people accomplishing amazing feats, but it's important to understand the years of hard work behind it. Also, the amount of times they failed and the work required to get to that level.

So focus on yourself. Because everyone is beginner at one point or another. Even me when it comes to the gym, there was a time when I had no idea what I was doing and couldn't lift heavy at all. I worked hard and years later I can lift some really good weight.

But it didn't happen overnight...

After giving birth, you've gained an amazing blessing, a new identity, and wouldn't change it for the world. But let's be real, motherhood isn't as perfect as that mom blogger's instagram pic!

You can't remember the last time you put yourself first. When you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror, you can barely recognize yourself. You may have stopped buying new clothes and gotten used to wearing the same stretchy pants that are a lot more forgiving than your pre-mom skinny jeans. You'll make sure your kids have a perfectly balanced plate but by the time it's your turn to eat, you might as well eat the scraps off your kids plate because you don't want to waste food! Before you know it, it's 9PM and you haven't sat down to eat a proper meal. The kids are finally asleep and you're exhausted. So you turn to comfort food and some Netflix and before you know it, you're 3 hours into your fave show with too many wrappers you toss away before anyone else sees.

I get it mama, I've been there too. It's really painful to go from being an ambitious go-getter woman to living completely for others and forgetting about yourself in the process. If this is you now, this doesn't have to be you 12 weeks from now.

I want you to finally put yourself first. Not in a selfish way, but in a way that will allow you to be healthier and happier for you AND your family. I want you to be able to have healthy meals but not cook separately for yourself (because let's be real - ain't nobody got time for that!). I want you to love your body, for what it is now, and what it will transform into in the coming weeks. And hey, if you want, I want you to buy yourself at least one new mama outfit you look and feel fabulous in! [I totally get what it feels like to not buy new clothes for myself, I was super grateful to be gifted this dress by a good friend so we can do a family photoshoot].

When people ask me why I workout so much or want to eat healthy. There’s a lot of reasons I can give them that are just about me. But the biggest reason is so I can set the example for my kids to follow. 

I see the difference it already has on my daughters, they actually enjoy the idea of working out and being physically active. For them working out isn’t a chore or something difficult. It’s something they see their parents do and they want to join in. 

They really are my workout partners on some days and Insha’Allah they will grow up with working out being a perfectly normal part of their life.

Parents often ask me how to motivate their children to workout. Well, the best way is to lead by example. Use your own kids as a motivation to want to workout and they will follow your lead. 

It’s just like getting them to pray salaah, they will be more likely to do it if they see you giving it importance and having them join you. Same goes for nutrition. If they see you avoiding it or complaining about having to eat healthy, they will follow suit. 

Creating the right environment in the home where you along with your kids enjoy being active is key in them continuing to do it as they get older. Which can also play a major factor in you reaching your goals. 

The members who sign up with us (The Healthy Muslims Program) not only see a difference in their own personal goals, but also the positive effect it has on their entire household. The family may be skeptical at first, but as they see you reaching your goals and feeling better, they will start to follow.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about us is that it must be "easy" for us to be healthy.

Uhm.....no.

There are a lot of underlying assumptions to that statement, such as thinking that we are always motivated and because we have the knowledge, it should be easy for us.

Despite Belal and I being so immersed in nutrition and fitness....it isn't always easy. We aren't always motivated and with 3 kids, we are often trying to deal with *life*.

We have some key principles that make it easier for us to make the healthier choice even when it feels hard.

This consists of:

1. A system - this means meal planning and having a workout planned out
2. Scheduling - when are we cooking? When are we eating? When are we working out?
3. Accountabity - as much as it can be annoying to have your spouse not supporting you in ordering something off of UberEats, it does make a difference. On the workout front - when I see Belal is going to the gym I secretly get jealous that he has kid-free time and insist he watch the kids so I can too 😂
4. Personalization - nutrition and fitness is not generic. Between the 2 of us, we eat and workout very differently and have different goals too.

Being a father is tough.

But the toughest part isn’t about the responsibilities that come with being a dad. But rather trying better oneself to be a better role model. Trying to set the right examples and help lead them in the right direction. 

Having two daughters first, I never felt as much pressure or worry because my daughter's first role model is their mom (@nutritionbynaz). And knowing the person she is gives me excitement about the women that my daughters will grow up to be because of who their mother is.  

Now having a son and knowing he will look to me first is a scary thought. That is the toughest responsibility that falls on a parent. To try to better oneself to then lead by example. 

There are alot of blessings that come with being a parent. One of them is the moment of reflection on my own life and how I can change to be better. To be a better person, a better husband, father, son and ultimately a better Muslim.
