Savoury oats [save to make to satisfy your desi tastebuds]

Oats is SO good for you! But I do often hear people tell me they don’t like the texture or the sweet flavour of traditional oat recipes. Here’s a savoury oats recipe you have to try! (It kind of reminds me of Haleem!)

Ingredients:
1 onion
1 tomato
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp red chili powder (increase If you want it spicier)
2 cups veggies (I used broccoli, mushrooms, peppers)
1 cup rolled oats
3 cups water
4 eggs

Makes 2 adult servings or 1 adult + 2 child servings (as shown in video).

As my baby approaches his first year, I can’t help but think how much of challenge it was for me over this past year. It definitely feels like an accomplishment reaching that one year point where my baby and I have gone through so many changes. The first few weeks/months is when the mom is seen as “postpartum” and then she is just expected to bounce back and keep up with life’s demands. Seeing so many new moms in a similar situation, know that I see you, I feel you, and I appreciate you ❤️. Make your desi plate healthier! Eating healthy doesn’t mean you should give up your cultural foods. There are definitely a long list of things you can change - but to get started, you can make a significant change with these small changes mentioned in the video!

I was at my parents house (hence the traditional Corningware plate 😜) and wanted to show you all how I make small changes so I can still enjoy the food offered to me. I never want others to feel bad nor do I want to feel like I have to give up my cultural foods.

Share with your family members so everyone in your house can get on board! It makes it a lot easier to make changes when you have your family support!

[SAVE TO MAKE LATER]
I love paneer! If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a cheese that doesn’t melt (kind of the texture of firm tofu but better). One of my fave quick vegetarian meals is this paneer jalfrezi. To make it you need:
1 package paneer
1 small onion
1 tomato
1 tsp salt
1 tsp red chili powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground coriander
2 bell peppers
1/2 cup water

The key to eating healthy while enjoying your cultural foods is your portion size! I have this curry with some bread or roti and a side salad for a balanced meal. Let me know if you try it out!

How I meal prep for the week!

I’m doing a full Sunday meal prep after a very long time, so it did take me a bit longer than I’m used to…but I’m SO glad I got this done! We started off this week going from 2 to 3 sick kids, so it’s helpful to have healthy meals on hand. As much as I want to stress eat, I won’t because I have a fridge full of food!

Here’s what I made:
Steak stir fry
Peri peri salmon
Paneer pepper curry (I guess you could call it a jalfrezi)
Pickled mangos
Beet slaw
Tomato salad
Yellow rice

And yes, I will share the recipes of most of these dishes iA!

It’s been a minute…and I gotta be honest…the mental load of motherhood and adjusting to 3 kids has been a challenge for me in the past little while. I’ll have great weeks where I feel balanced and then weeks where I just feel like I’m everything to everyone else and forgetting myself in the process. Today was a particularly challenging day because 2/3 kids were sick…so I messaged Belal and let him know I was going to go for a bike ride. That’s step 1 - letting your support people know what you need, when you need it. I sent that message because I needed that added accountability and wouldn’t have done it otherwise. The thing is, I haven’t gone on a solo bike ride in over 2 years! So by the time he came home I was ready to make an excuse on why the kids needed me and why I couldn’t leave. But since I sent that message, Belal knew I needed to leave so with his encouragement, I headed out. It may seem like something small, but that 30 minute solo bike ride of being able to HEAR MY OWN THOUGHTS was so needed. It gave me the clarity I needed and reminded me that although it will take time for my to find myself again, I will get there inshaAllah ❤️.

So that’s where I’m at, I’m hoping to be back into the swing of things soon iA, just wanted to give you all an update!

There is so much fear around traveling with kids - and after finally doing it earlier this month, I can say that it was honestly such an amazing experience alhumdulilah! Yes we had to slow things down a bit to meet our kids’ needs, but to have these new experiences with our kids by our sides was so special.

I find there is so much emphasis on social media when it comes to the challenging side of children. It’s not always easy, but it can definitely be beautiful ❤️.
